TRACEY WILLEY · HOME DESIGN STRATEGIST

Tracey Willey, Home Design Strategist and founder of Torch & Rose

My husband and I have owned and renovated a number of homes. Some extensively. Some one room at a time.

Every house was different. Different budgets, different constraints, different problems to solve. Some of it was architecture and renovation. Some of it was furniture, finishes, flow, or working out what a room actually needed.

Living through all of it taught me something a course can't: a home doesn't have to happen all at once to be well designed.

What I actually do

Most people don't need more options. They need someone to tell them which of the options in front of them is right, and why.

I find the common thread in what you respond to — the thing connecting the twelve images you saved that seem to have nothing in common. I identify what's actually preventing a room from feeling right, which is rarely the thing you think it is. And I decide what to keep, what to change, what deserves investment, and what can wait.

Expensive and good are not the same thing. The right decision made early is worth more than the budget spent late.

Rug, fabric, tile and wood samples laid out for a room design

I was already doing this work — for friends, for family, for anyone who asked. Sometimes that meant walking a room and naming what wasn't working. Sometimes a full plan, sourcing, a renovation, staying through implementation.

I could have built a business around it years ago.

My husband and I have five boys. We started our family by adopting our oldest two through foster care. For a long time, being available to them was where I wanted my time and attention to be. That was the right decision and I'd make it again.

Now life looks different. My sons are watching what I do next.

Torch & Rose isn't a new interest. It's a body of work that finally has a name.
